AN LGBTQ2S+ YOUTH PLAYWRITING RESEARCH SUMMER PROGRAM

The curtain may be closed on Playbright for 2022, but stay tuned for updates on our 2023 programming!

Scroll down to see some highlights from this year's program...

For two weeks, Studio 247 was our home.

Led by our co-facilitators, Playbright participants explored different aspects of playwriting and the creative process through a series of multi-modal exercises.

Group discussions about embodiment,  theatre, and life, in general, helped to guide the program and shed light on current LGBTQ2S+ youth experiences.

Our Playbright staff arrived extra early Monday morning to get everything set up. Little did we know, that our participants would arrive almost as early as we did!

Excitement was in the air as the intensive playwriting research program began.

Our guest playwright Gabe Maharjan shared some of their work and led an inspiring session.

A professional dramaturg also worked one-on-one with participants as they worked on developing their 15-minute playlets.

August 19th, 2022: The Performance

After working tirelessly, the participants' scripts were finally ready to be printed. Together with a professional director and three actors, the participants had the opportunity to workshop and stage their pieces.

Friends and family crowded La Balustrade to enjoy a night filled with brand-new plays written by our budding playwrights. A standing ovation and thunderous applause filled La Balustrade.

Before we close the curtains on this story, here are parting words from our participants about Playbright...
"I really enjoyed it, and it was so incredible seeing my vision come to life."

"What so many people like, especially queer youth need.

We really need a space to just be,  so it was very, very awesome and I had a really amazing time."

"I’d love to do it again, if it happens again, and I’d want it to be longer."
