PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Playbright runs for two consecutive weeks in August 7-11th and August 14-18th from 9am-4pm on Monday-Friday and is held at the National Theatre School of Canada's Saint Dennis-Campus and Monument-National Campus.

The first week is dedicated to formal instruction combined with exploring different aspects of playwriting through highly interactive exercises and writing prompts. Each writing prompt has been designed to explore one aspect of playwriting (e.g., character, setting) as explore senses of embodiment. Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing and shoes as some of the exercises involve movement and mind/body work (e.g., across-the-floor exercises).

The second week is dedicated to guiding Playbright participants in expanding one piece of work from week one into a playlet (a short play) with help of professional dramaturgs (a literary editor who consults with playwrights and facilitates transforming work into plays). Playbright participants will have the option of having their playlet performed at the end of the program in a closed staged reading on the last Friday of the program.
